When It Comes to Lighting, What Is Color Temperature?

How To Decide Between Color Temperature Options.

What is correlated color temperature?

Color temperature, or in our case, a correlated color temperature is a description of the warmth or coolness of a light source. The term correlated comes from the fact that light color temperature is considered technically an approximation from a behavior found in nature when you heat up a metal. When you heat up metal, the color of the metal changes as its temperature increases. As the metal is heated the light emitted changes from red to blue. Although the correlated color temperature is measured in Kelvin (unit of measurement for temperature), it is important to understand that color temperature does not describe the actual temperature of the LED light bulb itself, but the color of the light that it is emitting.
If you think about color theory, colors like red, orange and yellow are considered warm colors, and blue and green are considered cool colors. This same logic is applied to the correlated color temperature in the light. However, there is an important observation that must be done. Although confusing at times, the higher the Kelvin temperature unit a light bulb has, then the cooler the light color on the light bulb is going to be, similarly the lower Kelvin temperature unit, then the warmer the color. For example, light bulbs with Kelvins ranging from 1800k-3000k are considered warm lights, and light bulbs ranging from 3000k-10,000k are cool.

What is the best color temperature for your Calgary LED Lighting project?

The truth of the matter is that there are no rules regarding the use of light bulbs with a specific color temperature. It is solely based on personal preference. However, there is a general practice of using warm colors when you want to recreate a comfortable and soothing ambiance suitable for relaxation, and cool colors where you want a cleaner, energized, and brighter feel of the space.
Low color temperatures are typically used in home areas like living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. Medium color temperatures are reserved for spaces where more visibility is important like kitchens, studies, offices, closets, and bathrooms, etc. High color temperatures are usually used in commercial, offices, retail, classrooms, medical facilities, garages, warehouses, art studios, and industrial settings.
At LED Lighting Specialists we provide different color temperature solutions to your LED lighting needs. Check out our extensive product catalog for LED color temperature light bulb options such as the GU10 track light, LED panels, PAR30-012-AH, and many more!
